“Steve Post, long-time morning host on WNYC and one of New York radio’s all-time great contrarians, died Sunday,” writes David Hinckley in Monday’s (8/4) New York Daily News. “He had earlier recovered from colon and lung cancer. He hosted ‘Morning Music,’ a now-defunct classical show on WNYC from 1982 until 2001. He returned to WNYC in 2002 to host ‘The No Show,’ a quirky combination of music and commentary…. Post was born in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School…. He started his full-time radio career in the 1960s at WBAI, the Pacifica station noted for its assortment of mostly progressive hosts…. He worked as a newsman for a short while at WBLS before taking over ‘Morning Music’ on WNYC from the late Robert Lurtsema. The show was primarily music, but Post also injected commentary on matters from Ronald Reagan to WNYC management. He often grumbled that reading ‘underwriting’ messages on WNYC was not much different from reading ads on commercial stations.… Friends also said he was not as grumpy and sometimes cynical in person as he was on the air. Post is survived by his wife of many years, Laura Rosenberg.”
