“A Grammy-nominated pop singer, an unconventional pianist and a flamenco dancer are all part of the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic’s first full season,” writes Amy Reynolds in Monday’s (8/4) Times of Trenton (N.J.). “Music director Daniel Spalding, who organized the season, said he is very excited for the five-concert season.” The season opens in October with pianist Awadagin Pratt in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4; also planned are Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Valentine’s Day programs. “The orchestra, which consists of musicians from the defunct Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra, was formed last fall with a new conductor, new management and revised marketing strategies and plans to ensure the orchestra has a successful future, Spalding said…. The most difficult part of the season, Spalding said, will be raising the money. The orchestra has not been approved for a nonprofit status so it is difficult to obtain money from foundations and impossible to receive money from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Spalding said…. Last season, the orchestra held just two concerts, and Spalding is hoping that this year’s first full season will draw back a proper audience and restore the renamed orchestra to prominence…. Performances will be held at the [1,700-seat] Patriots Theater at the Trenton War Memorial.”
