The Wisconsin Philharmonic, based in Waukesha, has announced that its 2014-15 season will mark the bicentennial of the Norwegian Constitution (1814) as well as upcoming anniversaries of Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) and Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). The season will open on October 12 with Music Director Alexander Platt leading Sibelius’s Finlandia, the “Symphonie Singuliere” by Franz Berwald, Hugo Alfven’s Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 (“Midsummer Vigil”), and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Maria Bachmann. Also planned during the season are Nielsen’s Little Suite for Strings and Prelude to Act II of Saul and David; Sibelius’s En Saga, Dag Wiren: Serenade for Strings, Spring Song (Op.16), and Andante Festivo; Grieg’s Two Elegiac Melodies (Heart Wounds—The Last Spring) and Piano Concerto in A Minor. Most concerts take place at Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield; also planned are a “Scandinavian Christmas” featuring choirs from the Brookfield East High School and Arrowhead High School, at Carroll University’s Shattuck Auditorium; and a concert featuring oboist Julia Simpson, winner of the orchestra’s youth concerto competition, at St. John’s Military Academy, in Delafield.
