The new-music collective Bang on a Can is partnering with the U.S. Department of State this October and November for the third year of OneBeat, a U.S. residency and tour that will bring together 25 musicians from 17 countries. Participating musicians will collaboratively compose, produce, and perform original music and develop strategies for social engagement through music in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Fellows in the program include Brazilian percussionist and educator Lara Klaus; Turkish singer-songwriter and composer Fidel Kilic; Indonesian experimental vocalist Peni Rini; Moroccan producer/organizer Abdellah Hassak; and Los Angeles MC/educator Dahlak Brathwaite. The program begins with a two-week residency at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California, where fellows will write, record, and produce music; jam with local musicians; and work with Bay Area educators, organizers, and entrepreneurs. During the two-week tour, fellows will lead workshops and public events with youth and community groups in Boyle Heights (Los Angeles); Arcosanti, Arizona; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. OneBeat’s mission is to create high-quality original music as a means to cross cultural and political divides. It is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. For more, visit 1beat.org.
