Two principal musician appointments have been announced by the Fort Worth (Tex.) Symphony Orchestra: ALLAN STEELE, principal cello, and THOMAS CUPPLES, principal trumpet.
Allan Steele goes to Fort Worth following completion of a bachelor’s degree at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he was a student of Ronald Leonard, former principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A Chicago native, he had earlier studied at the Music Institute of Chicago and was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, with which he also appeared as soloist at a very young age. He is a founding member of the classical music group MC2, and performs regularly in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas.
Thomas Cupples assumes the principal trumpet post after serving as assistant principal trumpet since 2011. He was formerly second trumpet in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Before joining the NSO in 2005 he held principal trumpet posts in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and Israel’s Haifa Symphony Orchestra. Cupples attended New England Conservatory, where his principal teachers were Charles Schlueter and Norman Bolter. He spent two summers as a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Institute, studying with Roger Voisin and Thomas Rolfs.
