The Minnesota Orchestra’s fourth weeklong Common Chords residency will take place this year from September 16 to 20 in Bemidji, Minnesota, just over 200 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The residency’s more than 25 events include a Talking Circle at the American Indian Resource Center; Kinder Konzerts at the Bemidji Public Library and Paul Bunyan Kindergarten Center; and a demonstration of the science of sound at the Headwaters Science Center. At the Bemidji High School Auditorium, Sarah Hicks—the orchestra’s Principal Conductor of Pops and Presentations—will conduct the full orchestra in an all-Mendelssohn program including Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”), the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the Hebrides Overture on September 19. The following evening, Music Director Osmo Vänskä will lead the third, sixth, and seventh symphonies of Sibelius. Chamber performances are also planned at First National Garden Court, Mount Zion Church, First Lutheran Church, Sanford Hospital, Bemidji State University, and Bemidji Brewing Tap Room. Bemidji is the fourth Minnesota city to host a Common Chords residency, following Grand Rapids in October 2011, Willmar (May 2012), and Hibbing (May 2014).
