The New Century Chamber Orchestra will open its 2014-15 season—the seventh under the leadership of Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg—on September 11 in Berkeley, California, with three pieces by Derek Bermel, whose works will be featured throughout the season. Bermel will also perform as clarinetist in two works on the season-opening program: A Short History of the Universe for String Quartet and Clarinet (inspired by his study of gravitational physics and string theory) and Silvioudades. Also included on the program are Bermel’s Oct Up for two string quartets and percussion, Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, and Shchedrin’s orchestration of Bizet’s Carmen Suite.  The New Century Chamber Orchestra performs at multiple Bay Area locations, including in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and San Rafael.
