The Des Moines Symphony has invited members of the public to vote online for one of three encore pieces for its Russian-themed season-opening concert on September 27 at the Des Moines Civic Center, led by Music Director Joseph Giunta. The three encore choices are the pas de deux from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Glière’s “Russian Sailor’s Dance,” and “Procession of the Sardar” from Ippolitov-Ivanov’s Caucasian Sketches. Voting ends on September 12. The Des Moines Symphony’s opening September 27 and 28 concerts will feature Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles,” Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 (“Classical”), and Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto, with soloist Nareh Arghamanyan.
