On Wednesday, October 1 from 3 to 4 p.m. Eastern time, the Wallace Foundation will host a panel discussion on innovative practices in building arts audiences. Joining moderator Kurt Andersen, host of Public Radio International’s Studio 360, will be Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts; Robert Battle, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Kelly Tweeddale, executive director of the Seattle Opera; and James Houghton, founding artistic director of the Signature Theatre Company. At the event, Will Miller, president of the Wallace Foundation, will announce the foundation’s new arts funding initiative. The event will be live-streamed at www.thrivingarts.org, and questions may be tweeted to @WallaceFdn #buildingartsaudiences.

Topics include the Wallace Foundation’s new arts initiative, Building Audiences for Sustainability, which aims to provide meaningful support to arts organizations whose artistic vision and missions include building audiences; introduce effective ideas and practices that support arts organizations in their efforts to reach new audiences; and spotlight programs that bring in new audiences and retain current ones, and are also sustainable and contribute to the organization’s financial health.

The event will also feature a new report from the Wallace Foundation, The Road to Results: Effective Practices for Building Arts Audiences, which identifies and explains nine actions that arts organizations can take to increase their success in engaging audiences.
