The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has appointed MASON BATES to its composition faculty. Now beginning his fifth season as Mead Composer in Residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he is known for classically conceived orchestral and non-orchestral works incorporating electronic techniques drawn from his career as a DJ and techno artist. His music has been featured in the San Francisco Symphony’s “Beethoven and Bates” programs and performed by such ensembles as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, YouTube Symphony, and the vocal ensemble Chanticleer; in December of this year the Seattle Symphony will premiere his Cello Concerto, co-commissioned with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra. Bates holds degrees in composition and English literature from the Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, where his teachers included composers John Corigliano, David Del Tredici, and Samuel Adler. At the University of California, Berkeley, he studied with Edmund Campion and received a PhD in composition. Bates has taught music history and literature at the San Francisco Conservatory.
