“The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is creating a new apprenticeship program for young string players, bridging the gap between conservatory training and orchestral employment,” writes Scott Cantrell in Tuesday’s (9/30) Dallas Morning News. “The DSO/Jaap van Zweden Scholars program was announced at a Tuesday luncheon with DSO musicians. Starting in January 2015, the program will select four or five fellows for two-year commitments. Chosen from recent graduates of major conservatories and universities, fellows will rehearse and perform in select Dallas Symphony concerts and receive coaching from orchestra musicians, even music director Jaap van Zweden…. In partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas, fellows will be housed there and be enrolled in a curriculum of leadership training…. It’s being inaugurated as part of a $10 million gift from Margaret McDermott…. ‘We want these folks to have a musical experience that is typical of a modern American orchestra,’ said DSO president and CEO Jonathan Martin, ‘everything from classical to ReMix to pops to family and education concerts…. We want to give them the tools to ask the right questions as they start their own careers, probably inside an orchestra as performers. We’re looking to cultivate people who will perform leadership roles in their orchestras and communities.’ ”
