“Close on the heels of the Future Symphony Institute, organized by BSO musician Andrew Balio and held last weekend at the University of Baltimore, comes the ‘What’s Next for Classical Music?’ symposium, organized by Peabody Institute dean Fred Bronstein. It will be held at Peabody on Oct. 21,” writes Tim Smith in Thursday’s (10/2) Baltimore Sun. The free symposium will be held from 2 to 5pm in Peabody’s Friedberg Concert Hall, and it will also be live-streamed. “Joining Bronstein will be BSO music director Marin Alsop… Ben Cameron, director for arts funding at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; Thomas Dolby, Homewood Professor of the Arts at John Hopkins University; Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras; and flutist Marina Piccinini, one of Peabody’s faculty artists.… Bronstein said: ‘It is absolutely critical … that we take time to examine the broader societal and musical trends shaping our world, and how we can best prepare our students for a constantly changing, dynamic landscape.’ Topics to be covered at the symposium include the changing environment for classical music; how that will affect training; and the role and responsibility of conservatories to encourage ‘a love of music and [build] audiences for it.’ ”
