In Baltimore, the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University will host a symposium entitled “What’s Next for Classical Music?” on October 21 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Peabody’s Friedberg Concert Hall. Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels and Provost Robert Lieberman will open the free symposium, which will be moderated by Peabody Dean Fred Bronstein. Among the panelists will be Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras; Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop; Ben Cameron, director for arts funding at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; Thomas Dolby, Homewood Professor of the Arts at John Hopkins University; and flutist Marina Piccinini, a faculty artist at Peabody. The symposium will be live-streamed at the Johns Hopkins Ustream channel. Topics will include the changing environment for classical music and its effect on training; and how conservatories can encourage “a love of music and build audiences for it.” More information is available here.
