Today, Musical America announced that opera director Peter Sellars has been named 2015 Artist of the Year. Musical America is publisher of the annual International Directory for the Performing Arts and of the daily Musical America news website. Sellars will receive his award at a ceremony in New York City on December 11, along with the other 2015 winners: John Luther Adams (composer of the year), Gianandrea Noseda (conductor of the year), violinist Lisa Batiashvili (instrumentalist of the year), and soprano Christine Goerke (vocalist of the year). Sellars’ most recent U.S. production was a staging of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion by the Berlin Philharmonic at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. John Luther Adams received the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his orchestral work Become Ocean, premiered by the Seattle Symphony in 2013 and performed in 2014 at Carnegie Hall. Batiashvili is currently artist-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic.
