In Sunday’s (11/9) Plain Dealer (Cleveland), Zachary Lewis previews the ninth season of the Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami residency, among the initiatives under Managing Director Holly Hudak, who is departing in December. “Cleveland’s Miami residency … on the eve of its ninth season … is practically bolted into bedrock. In the last two years, the list of Miami-based supporters has grown by 600, and the budget has risen from $2.3 million to $3 million. The Musical Arts Association of Miami, the residency’s governing board, gained 10 members and the organization itself received public charity status, permitting it to strategize and present as an independent body. All of this has taken place concurrently with a surge of cultural development in South Florida…. Students in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami also will have access to the orchestra, during a one-day ‘residency’ at the Arsht Center consisting of a side-by-side rehearsal, master classes and a reading of student compositions. Over the season, several musicians also will appear at Miami-area schools, and the full ensemble will present a concert at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. In short, the residency is thriving.”
