“Violinist Nicola Benedetti led thousands of schoolchildren in a music lesson with a difference as they played along with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra,” states an unsigned article in Tuesday’s (11/11) Herald (Glasgow). “The classical musician was taking part in the 10 Pieces Event at BBC Scotland, Pacific Quay, with uses technology to stream the music session through the internet to watching pupils. Nicola, a former BBC Young Musician of the year, is performing some of the ten pieces lives, while thousands of children pick up on her demonstration. The pupils were encouraged to join in with the orchestra during the live interactive version of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony yesterday, and learn about rhythm and pitch as they play along using percussion instruments, Barney Harwood, Nicola, and conductor Steven Bell helped to explain how an orchestra works to create its unique sound, while Nicola also shared her top musical tips as well as telling pupils about her own career as a performer, from her first lesson through to playing in the world’s great concert halls. The violinist said: ‘This project is absolutely one of a kind, I can’t quite describe adequately my enthusiasm for it and support for it.’ ”
