“After 90 years on West 57th St., Steinway & Sons is moving its showroom and offices to Sixth Avenue and 43rd Street,” writes Brian Wise on Wednesday (11/12) at NYC classical radio station WQXR’s news blog. “The company says it has signed a 15-year lease for the 40,000 square-foot building at 1133 Sixth Ave. now occupied by the International Center of Photography. ICP is relocating to the Bowery. Steinway’s move is slated for the end of 2015. Two years ago, Steinway sold its 109 W. 57th St. building for $195 million. The firm has been in the beaux arts building for since 1925 and will be leaving by the end of December. The new location, which will be designed by architect Annabelle Selldorf, is expected to include a first-floor showroom with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The building also will have a recital space, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and offices on the 13th floor. Steinway says this is the first time in its 161-year history that its corporate operations will be centralized in one location. Steinway will maintain its factory in Astoria, Queens.”
