The deadline is February 6, 2015 for composers under age 28 to apply for the BMI Student Composer Awards, given annually for instrumental, vocal, or electronic compositions. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited school, college, or conservatory of music, or engaged in private study of music with a recognized teacher. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich will preside over the judges’ panel: preliminary judges are Alexandra Du Bois, Shafer Mahoney, David Fulmer, and Sean Shepherd; and final judges are Kristin Kuster, Ingram Marshall, Kevin Puts, and Bernard Rands. Prizes will range from $500 to $5,000. Winners will be notified in May, and a press release will be posted at BMI’s website. The BMI Foundation was founded in 1985 and encourages the creation, performance, and study of music through awards, scholarships, grants, and commissions.
