The deadline is February 1, 2015 for violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists under age 20 to apply for the Stulberg International String Competition, set to take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 16, 2015. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges—Heidi Castleman, Sarah Chang, and Anthony Ross—who will select twelve semifinalists and four alternates. The first-place winner will receive $6,000 and a performance with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra or the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra; second place, $5,000 and a performance with the Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra; and third place, $4,000 and a performance with the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra. Each semifinalist will receive a $1,000 stipend, and a prize of $500 will be awarded for best performance of a solo Bach selection. For more information and to apply, click here. The competition was founded in 1975 in memory of Julius Stulberg, who died in 1974. Stulberg was professor of violin at Western Michigan University and conductor of the university’s symphony orchestra, as well as conductor of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra.
