Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival 2015: “From the Canyons to the Stars”

Posted on: February 2, 2015

At the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, from July 19 to August 24 in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, the artist in residence will be Alan Gilbert, music director of the New York Philharmonic. Gilbert will lead a performance of Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles (From the Canyons to the Stars) on August 22 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe. The program, inspired by Utah’s Bryce Canyon, will feature 43 musicians, the largest ensemble yet to perform a single composition at the festival. Also featured this summer will be the world premieres of a new string quartet by Sean Shepherd, performed by the FLUX Quartet, and a work for two pianos by Alexander Goehr, featuring soloists Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee. Also planned is the premiere of Acequias, a quintet for guitar and string quartet, by Marc Neikrug, the festival’s artistic director, featuring guitarist Lukasz Kuropaczewski and the Orion String Quartet. The festival will continue to offer free open rehearsals throughout the summer, and a concert on August 5 will feature new works by composers Katherine Balch and Max Grafe, participants in the festival’s Young Composers String Quartet Project, currently in its third year.
