Canada’s Toronto Symphony Orchestra has announced programming for 11th annual New Creations Festival, February 28 to March 7, 2015. This year, composer and festival curator George Benjamin joins TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian to present new works including world and Canadian premieres. Comprising three programs, the festival spotlights Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan and includes two TSO commissions/world premieres, one North American premiere, and four Canadian premieres. Featuring works by Vivian Fung (China/Canada), Chris Paul Harman (Canada), Hans Abrahamsen (Denmark), Dai Fujikura (Japan/U.K.), and the late Henri Dutilleux (France), the festival also offers pre- and post-concert events, and culminates in an opera-in-concert performance of Benjamin’s critically acclaimed Written on Skin. Benjamin will conduct the opera, which will feature singers who performed the work’s world premiere in 2012. Among the pre-concert performances, intermissions chats, and post-concert parties is a “Composers in Conversation” symposium, presented by the TSO and the Canadian Music Center, featuring George Benjamin, Hans Abrahamsen, and Chris Paul Harman, hosted by TSO Affiliate Composer Kevin Lau.
