“With diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia at an icy cold impasse, the Omaha Symphony is doing its part to warm things up,” writes Casey Logan in Thursday’s (2/26) Omaha World-Herald. “The symphony will stage a two-day Russian Music Festival next year, one highlight of the 2015-16 season announced today. The new season also emphasizes the organization’s family-friendly programming, expanding the symphony’s popular ‘Christmas Celebration’ from six to 10 performances and trumpeting a ‘Movie Music’ series.… The 2015-16 Masterworks series includes the orchestra’s first-ever performance of Dvorák’s Stabat Mater, Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Scheherazade’ featuring concertmaster Susanna Perry Gilmore, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with guest pianist Benjamin Hochman, and a performance of composer Clint Needham’s ‘Voices’ with the Hawthorne String Quartet. The upcoming Symphony Pops series includes two-night run with country quartet The Oak Ridge Boys to mark the 35th anniversary of the group’s hit song ‘Elvira,’ as well as programs devoted to Frank Sinatra, Celtic music, and composers George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern.… Other concerts in the upcoming season include performances of ‘Godfather’ composer Nino Rota’s Trombone Concerto, Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Peter and the Wolf,’ and Handel’s ‘Messiah’ with a 500-voice choir.”
