“The San Francisco Symphony’s 2015-16 season will see Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas plunge into the music of Robert Schumann, recording all four of the composer’s symphonies for a new release on the SFS Media label,” writes Joshua Kosman in Tuesday’s (3/3) San Francisco Chronicle. “The season will also feature commissioned premieres by Mason Bates, Ted Hearne and Jörg Widmann, as well as a focus on Sibelius in his 150th anniversary year…. The season will open late, with a Sept. 24 gala concert, because of the orchestra’s European tour to Edinburgh, London, the Lucerne Festival and more. It will run through July 2, concluding with performances of Mahler’s Second Symphony. Among the season highlights are a concert performance of Bernstein’s ‘On the Town’ May 25-29, as well as music by Jukka Tiensuu, Guillaume Connesson and Wojciech Kilar—all part of the orchestra’s initiative to encourage guest conductors to bring little-known works by their compatriots.… The season will also see the release of three new CDs recorded during previous performances” of works by John Adams, Mason Bates, and Beethoven. “The SoundBox series will continue for a second season, with curators to be named later.”
