Central Ohio Symphony Executive Director Warren Hyer was interviewed earlier this month on radio station WWFM’s A Tempo with Rachel Katz, a public affairs program devoted to issues, challenges, and opportunities facing the performing arts. The interview took place on March 7, and an audio file of the interview was posted on Tuesday (3/17). In the interview, Hyer discusses the orchestra’s therapeutic drumming program for adolescents and adults drug offenders in the justice system, and he gives specific examples of what the therapy entails, and plans for expansion. He also speaks about the world premiere of Reconnecting, a work by composer Ben Goldberg for drum circle and orchestra. The piece was funded through a Kickstarter campaign and musically illustrates the path from arrest to graduation from the drumming program, using program participants as performers, along with the orchestra. Central Ohio Symphony has received three Getty Education and Community Investment Grants for the drumming circles and related work from the League of American Orchestras.
