“Six months into her tenure with the San Diego Symphony, Martha Gilmer, the orchestra’s new CEO, is feeling good about the ensemble’s future,” writes James Chute in Thursday’s (3/26) San Diego Union-Tribune. “She’s met with everybody from politicians to cultural leaders, and she’s reached the same conclusion as the person who told her San Diego is a city whose best time is ahead of it.… She has an extensive to-do list to make that happen, and job one is finding the right music director to replace Jahja Ling when he steps down in 2017. She and the search committee are considering eight guest conductors who have been given slots in the symphony’s 2015-16 Jacobs Masterworks season, which was unveiled today and includes a month-long piano festival in January.… Gilmer is adamant that the committee can’t predetermine how long the search will take, just as it can’t predetermine who the next music director will be.” Guest conductors for the coming season include Karina Canellakis, David Danzmayr, Edo de Waart, Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla, Rory Macdonald, Cristian Macelaru, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and Joshua Weilerstein. The article includes the complete schedule for the 2015-16 Masterworks season.
