“A cancellation is never fun news for the Florida Orchestra. But in this case, there’s a pretty fun reason,” writes Stephanie Hayes in Wednesday’s (4/1) Tampa Bay Times. “Damon Gupton has canceled jobs guest-conducting next week’s coffee concerts with the Florida Orchestra because he landed a role in the upcoming NBC pilot Endgame, a Las Vegas drama starring Wesley Snipes. In addition to conducting for orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, San Diego Symphony and Florida Orchestra, Gupton is an actor who plays Detective Calvin Walker on the hit Fox show Empire and played district attorney Adam Page on WE TV’s The Divide.… The Detroit native and former assistant conductor of the Kansas City Symphony conducted the Florida Orchestra’s Pops in the Park concerts in October.… Gupton is scheduled to be back with the Florida Orchestra in February conducting Valentine’s Day pops concerts.… Endgame started filming recently in New Mexico.” Jeff Tyzik, the Florida Orchestra’s principal pops conductor, will fill in this month for Gupton.
