The Juilliard School will mark the 90th birthday of composer Pierre Boulez with a concert on April 19. Boulez, who turned 90 on March 26, has a long association with Juilliard: a frequent guest artist at the school since the 1970s, he most recently conducted a program at Juilliard in 2008, celebrating the centennial of composer Elliott Carter. On April 19, David Robertson, music director of the St. Louis Symphony and chief conductor and artistic director of Australia’s Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will lead the Juilliard Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in two works by Boulez: Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna and “Originel” from …explosante-fixe…. Also on the April 19 program are Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments, works that have been central in Boulez’s conducting career. David Robertson has enjoyed a close association with Pierre Boulez as colleague and mentor, serving as music director (1992-2000) of the Ensemble Intercontemporain (an ensemble founded by Boulez and of which he remains honorary president.)
