Hartford (Conn.) Symphony Orchestra Music Director CAROLYN KUAN has signed a contract extending her tenure for six years, through May 2022. She has served as the HSO’s music director since 2011, and her initial contract was renewed for two years in 2014. Before coming to Hartford she served as associate conductor of the Seattle Symphony, as artist-in-residence at New York City Ballet, and as assistant conductor of the Baltimore Opera Company. Kuan was the first female recipient of the Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship. An alumna of Smith College, she holds a master’s degree in music from the University of Illinois and a performance diploma from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.
