NICHOLAS PALMER, music director of the Owensboro (Ky.) Symphony Orchestra and the Lafayette (Ind.) Symphony Orchestra, has been named to an additional post as music director of the North Charleston POPS in South Carolina. Palmer has conducted widely in the U.S. and Europe, and has served as music director of the Altoona (Pa.) and Dubuque (Ia.) symphony orchestras, the Nashville Ballet, and Dubuque’s Heartland Ballet. A native of Massachusetts, he is a graduate of Harvard University and holds masters and doctoral degrees in orchestral conducting from New England Conservatory and the University of Iowa. In 1990, during his tenure with the Dubuque Symphony, Palmer received the Helen M. Thompson Award, which is presented in alternate years to young music directors and executive directors by the League of American Orchestras.
