The Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra celebrates its 40th birthday on April 23, an occasion it will mark with a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, led by TSYO Conductor Shalom Bard. The orchestra, founded in 1974 by Victor Feldbrill, performs seven public concerts each season, and counts among its alumni ten current members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, including Principal Oboe Sarah Jeffrey, Assistant Principal Trumpet Steven Woomert, Associate Principal Trombone Vanessa Fralick, and TSYO Conductor Shalom Bard. Alumni also include Barenaked Ladies bassist Jim Creeggan, composer/violinist Owen Pallett, broadcaster Kathleen Kajioka, and Toronto Summer Music Festival Artistic Director Douglas McNabney.
