New Music for America (NMFA), a commissioning project spearheaded by a group of smaller-budget orchestras, is aiming for 50-state participation in the commissioning and performance of Dreamtime Ancestors by Christopher Theofanidis. Scored for a Mozart-size orchestra and approximately fifteen minutes in length, the work will receive its world premiere on October 3, 2015, by the Plymouth (Mass.) Philharmonic under Music Director Steven Karidoyanes. NMFA’s goal is to have at least one orchestra in each of the 50 states become a co-commissioner of Dreamtime Ancestors and schedule a performance of the work. The cost to participate in the consortium is based on the orchestra’s size, with a premium for premieres of the work in different time zones. The steering committee, chaired by Robert Rosoff, former executive director of the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Symphony, is still seeking orchestras in ten states: Alabama, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia. Orchestras wishing to participate should contact the steering committee at bob.rosoff@gmail.com.
