BRETT MITCHELL’s contract with the Cleveland Orchestra has been extended through the 2016-17 season. Currently assistant conductor, a post he has held since September 2013, Mitchell becomes associate conductor in the 2015-16 season. The orchestra has also extended his contract as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra through the 2016-17 season. He recently concluded a five-year tenure as music director of the Saginaw Bay (Mich.) Symphony Orchestra; previous posts include assistant conductor, Orchestre National de France, and director of orchestras, Northern Illinois University. From 2007 to 2010 Mitchell was a participant in the American Conducting Fellowship Program of the League of American Orchestras. A native of Seattle, he holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.
