Georgia’s Symphony Orchestra Augusta has extended Music Director SHIZUO Z. KUWAHARA’s contract as music director for three years, through June 30, 2018. Now in his sixth season as SOA music director, he was a first-prize winner of Germany’s Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition, and was assistant conductor under Seiji Ozawa at the 2008 Saito Kinen Festival, where he conducted the Ozawa Jyuki Orchestra. Kuwahara has also served as associate conductor of the Virginia Symphony and as professor of music/director of orchestra activities at the College of William & Mary and American University. A native of Tokyo, he studied conducting at Yale University and the Eastman School of Music.
