“Locals aren’t the only ones aware of the changes taking place at the Cleveland Orchestra,” writes Zachary Lewis in Monday’s (5/18) Plain Dealer (Cleveland). When the League of American Orchestras “descends on Cleveland May 27-29 for its national conference … a host of industry insiders will witness how the orchestra and other prominent ensembles here are throwing open the doors to classical music…. ‘There’s a phenomenon, a change, rippling through our field,’ explained Jesse Rosen, president of the League…. The theme of the conference says it all: ‘The New Work of Orchestras.’ … The root subject of most presentations at the Cleveland Convention Center will be attracting and retaining new listeners. In that regard, Cleveland certainly has been a leader…. ‘That they’re bringing a national convention here is a recognition and endorsement of the ways we have changed in dealing with the challenges we face,’ said Gary Hanson, executive director of the orchestra…. Cleveland, of course, is merely the host of the conference, not the subject. Using a dedicated smartphone app, some 900 visitors—most of them league members—will navigate their way to a wide array of panel discussions and other presentations dealing with philanthropy, financial management, new music, community engagement, and digital innovation.”
