“The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra may have a new president and CEO, but he’s a familiar face to the city’s music community,” reports Stephen Hunt in Tuesday’s (6/16) Calgary Herald (Alberta, Canada). “The CPO announced Tuesday that Paul Dornian, the longtime director of the Mount Royal Conservatory, is their new president and CEO…. Dornian’s new job—he takes over July 2, from Ann Lewis Luppino, who is retiring—coincides with the completion of the $90 million Bella Concert Hall, on the campus of Mount Royal University, which … has been Dornian’s passion project since the 1990s. Dornian has had a long-standing relationship with the Calgary Philharmonic, having first served on the board of directors back in the mid-1990s, and taking a turn as its board chair from 2009-11.” A trained clarinetist, Dornian “has also performed with the Calgary Philharmonic, working as an extra musician on a number of occasions from 1982 to 1998.” He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and an MBA in international business from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School.
