“The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra begins its East Coast tour in Charleston on June 23 for a special concert featuring 12-year-old Charleston pianist Caleb Borick and about 20 members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra,” writes Adam Parker in Saturday’s (6/20) Post and Courier (Charleston, S.C.). “The concert has been dedicated to the victims of last week’s mass shooting at [Charleston’s] Emanuel AME Church. The youth orchestra is accepting free-will donations. All money collected will be given to the church, organizers said…. ‘Hopefully we can pack the house as a symbol of unity and goodness that especially exists in our youth at this time,’ said CSYO conductor Jack Cleghorn. ‘As (Leonard) Bernstein said, we will respond to violence by making our music more intensely, beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.’ The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra is led by Music Director Jean Montes…. The orchestra, committed to music education and diversity, is in its 20th season. Musicians will perform community service while in town, spending Tuesday morning cleaning part of the beach at Sullivan’s Island. The East Coast tour will take the group from Charleston to Williamsburg, Va., Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City.”
