During the Comic-Con Convention earlier this month, the San Diego Symphony performed a free Star Wars concert at Embarcadero Marina Park South before approximately 7,000 fans and Convention attendees, led by Sameer Patel, the orchestra’s new assistant conductor (Patel is an alumnus of the League of American Orchestras Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview). The July 10 concert, which was not announced in advance, featured music from Star Wars films, performed as footage from the movies was shown on a large screen. Audience members were given light sabers, and the concert was preceded by a video greeting from composer John Williams. Also present onstage were Star Wars original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, as well as Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, director of the forthcoming Star Wars film.
