An unsigned story in the Edmond Sun (Oklahoma) on Tuesday (7/21) reports, “Oklahoma Youth Orchestras has partnered with the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University to appoint Eric Garcia to the new position of artistic director of the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras and associate professor and music director of the OCU Symphony Orchestra.” Currently associate conductor at Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C., Garcia “has served as assistant conductor of the Seattle Symphony and cover conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He was chosen from a field of more than 100 applicants.” Garcia “has worked from the podium with artists ranging from Marvin Hamlisch and Herbie Hancock to The Chieftains and The Assad Brothers. A champion of new music and music education, he is a frequent guest conductor and clinician with high school orchestras.” Past positions include director of orchestral studies and associate professor of conducting, Oklahoma State University; director of orchestral activities, University of Evansville; music director, Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; and director of orchestras, St. Xavier University. Garcia received conducting training under Marin Alsop at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and at Aspen’s American Academy of Conducting.
