“The four composers who participated in the 2015 New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Edward T. Cone Composition Institute not only were mentored through the process of creating a work for the orchestra, but were also counseled on the business side of classical music,” writes Nancy Plum in Wednesday’s (7/22) Town Topics (Princeton, N.J.). “Institute Director Steven Mackey programmed the [Thursday] concert at Richardson Auditorium with four works from these very diverse composers,” with Joann Falletta leading the NJSO: Shuying Li’s Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night; Reinaldo Moya’s Siempre Lunes, Siempre Marzo; Luke Carlson’s The Burnished Tide; and Brendan Faegre’s Dirt to Gold. “Each composer introduced their own work in this concert which Ms. Falletta called an ‘evening of discoveries.’ … Mentor Steven Mackey closed the concert with one of his own pieces—Urban Ocean—which was commissioned in 2013 by the Aquarium of the Pacific…. NJSO’s Composition Institute provided an invaluable service to the composition field and the next generation of composers, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has always been a willing participant in promoting new music.” A separate radio piece at New Jersey’s WWFM by Rachel Katz includes a discussion with the four composers.
