The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey has announced the repertoire for its 96th season. It opens on October 3, under Music Director Charles Prince, with Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor (“Unfinished”). A December 12 “Happy New Year from Vienna” concert will feature waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss. Guest soloist for the annual free afternoon family concert on February 20 is Brianna Tang, recent medalist in the Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey; also scheduled for that concert is “Phil Harmonic and his Fabulous Orchestra,” a show featuring music by composer Dave Rimelis. On April 2, guest conductor Jose Serebrier leads a program that includes his own Violin Concerto (with Elmira Darvarova as soloist) and Tango in Blue as well as a movement from Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 4. Concluding the 2015-16 season on May 7 is an all-Elgar concert featuring Pomp and Circumstance, the “Enigma” Variations, and the string-orchestra version of Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47, for which the PSO will be joined by the Madison Quartet.
