The New York Philharmonic and Music Academy of the West (Santa Barbara, Calif.) have announced the selection of ten musicians who will participate during 2016 in the two organizations’ Global Academy Fellowship program, which was inaugurated in 2014. They are double bassist CARL ANDERSON, 20, an undergraduate at DePaul University; violinist BENJAMIN HOFFMAN, 25, a student at Yale University; cellist MAKI KUBOTA, 23, a graduate of Peabody Conservatory; hornist NIKOLETTE LaBONTE, 20, a student at Eastman School of Music; tubist JOSÉ MARTINEZ, 30, a native of Spain currently pursuing a doctorate at Boston University; violinist REBECCA REALE, 22, a graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music; trumpeter RAINER SAVILLE, 23, a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium in his native Australia; clarinetist SAMUEL SPARROW, 20, an undergraduate at Manhattan School of Music; flutist MARK TEPLITSKY, 23, a native of Jerusalem pursuing a master’s degree at the Shepherd School of Music; and bassoonist NAHO ZHU, 22, born in Kyoto, Japan, and currently a master’s degree candidate at the Shepherd School of Music.
The fellows will convene in New York in January 2016 for a ten-day training program that includes rehearsing and playing alongside New York Philharmonic musicians under the leadership of Music Director Alan Gilbert. Next summer at Music Academy of the West, Gilbert will rehearse and conduct the Academy Festival Orchestra, and Philharmonic musicians will serve as guest faculty at the Music Academy.
