“The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s executive vice president, Paul Hogle, has taken the helm of the organization for the next few months while President and CEO Anne Parsons is on sabbatical,” reports Sherri Welch in Wednesday’s (8/12) Crain’s Detroit. “Parsons is taking the sabbatical through October as one of three awardees of the McGregor Fund’s 2014 Eugene A. Miller Fellowship. The fellowship also enabled her to take her first trip to China in July, she said in a note to DSO supporters. That trip enabled Parsons to explore performance opportunities for the DSO in China, a country many U.S. orchestras have traveled to and are considering for performances, the DSO said. The 2014 fellowships were also awarded to Maury Okun of Detroit Chamber Winds, who is also currently on sabbatical until October, and Juanita Moore, who leads the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. Established by the McGregor Fund in 2009, the competitive fellowships offer nonprofit CEOs a reprieve from the day-to-day operations of running a nonprofit for personal rejuvenation, continuing professional education, benchmarking best practices at other nonprofits and doing something of benefit to their organization or field. Generally, the fellowships run 18 months.”
