The Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform the first of four free outdoor “Symphony Under the Stars” on September 1 at the 31st Street Stage in Virginia Beach, led by Resident Conductor Benjamin Rous. Concerts are also planned for William & Mary’s Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre in Williamsburg (September 3); Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown (September 5), with a pre-concert performance by the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown; and Chesapeake City Park in Chesapeake (September 6). Repertoire for the concerts includes the Bacchanale from Saint-Saens’s Samson and Dalilah, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Bartók’s Romanian Dances, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, as well as pops selections. The VSO’s regular 2015-16 concert season under Music Director JoAnn Falletta—September 18 at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News—will feature Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal, Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, and Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite for violin and Ravel’s Tzigane, with solo violinist Sarah Chang. The VSO’s mainstage 2015-16 programs are also performed in Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall and Virginia Beach’s Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, as well as other southeastern Virginia venues.
