In Wednesday’s (9/2) Marysville Advocate (Kansas), Sarah Kessinger previews “Orchestra on the Oregon Trail,” an event planned for Alcove Spring Historic Park in Blue Rapids, Kansas on September 6. “ ‘This is completely different from other events we’ve done,’ said Marshall County Arts Cooperative president Brad Ekiss. ‘Our county has worked together to pull this off, and we’re going to enjoy the sweet sounds of success on Sunday.’ Ekiss said nearly 1,400 tickets had sold by this week…. The 70-member Topeka Symphony Orchestra will arrive early Sunday to tune up on a large stage to be erected on a meadow at the site this week. The orchestra’s concert, kicking off the symphony’s 70th season, is set for 6 p.m., featuring music out of American history…. WIBW TV anchor Ralph Hipp will emcee the evening concert, and the station plans to cover the day’s activities.” Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett will lead the concert, featuring music by John Williams and John Philip Sousa, as well as Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite and Copland’s Rodeo. During the day there will be performances by country, folk, and jazz musicians as well as a cowboy poet, along with botany hikes and guided history tours.
