The 96-minute documentary film The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble will have its inaugural screening on September 13, during Canada’s Toronto International Film Festival, which takes place from September 10 to 20. The film is directed by Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom, 2013). Yo-Yo Ma and members of the Silk Road Ensemble will attend the world premiere screening and take part in a Q&A. Silk Road’s stated mission is to “create unexpected connections” through eclectic collaborations; musicians in the film—all of whom have toured with Ma and the ensemble—include Iran’s Kayhan Kalhor (kamancheh fiddle); China’s Wu Man (pipa); and Galicia’s Cristina Pato (gaita bagpipes). Other music-themed documentary films at the Toronto festival include The Reflektor Tapes, about the making of Arcade Fire’s album Reflektor; Janis: Little Girl Blue, about Janis Joplin; and Miss Sharon Jones! about R&B singer Sharon Jones.
