“Conductor Marin Alsop will step down as music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music after the 2016 season, concluding a remarkable 25-year run at the organization’s artistic helm,” writes Joshua Kosman in Thursday’s (9/17) San Francisco Chronicle. “ ‘It is with great sadness and after much contemplation that I make this decision but I believe this is the right time for me and for the Festival,’ she said in a statement. ‘I look forward to the 2016 season when we’ll celebrate all that we have accomplished together.’ Alsop, 58, who is music director of the Baltimore Symphony and the São Paulo Symphony, came to Cabrillo in 1992 as a champion of new music, particularly American music. Her tenure with the Santa Cruz festival has been marked by a commitment to the work of a noteworthy circle of established composers that includes John Adams, Christopher Rouse, James MacMillan, Jennifer Higdon, and more. But she has also been a champion of many younger rising composers, including Missy Mazzoli, Mason Bates, Dylan Mattingly, Anna Clyne and Kevin Puts. Executive Director Ellen Primack and the board have begun a search for Alsop’s successor.”
