“Lancaster Symphony Orchestra wants to challenge your idea of a symphony performance,” writes Jenelle Janci in Wednesday’s (9/16) Lancasteronline.com (Pennsylvania). “While the symphony still offers its traditional, classical music events this season, it also introduces a new popular-music series, POPS, on Saturday.… The program, featuring music from both recent and classic films, kicks off The Arts at Millersville’s fifth season and represents a partnership between it and LSO.” The program included selections from the movies Frozen, Star Wars, and The Wizard of Oz. “The symphony’s conductor and musical director, Stephen Gunzenhauser, will embrace the more relaxed atmosphere…. Laura Kendall, director of the office of visual and performing arts at Millersville University, says the concert is a departure from The Arts and Millersville’s typical gala-style opening night in that it has a more family-friendly theme.… Kendall says LSO’s creative approach to symphony performances through the popular music series is the direction orchestras are headed. ‘Orchestras all over the country are really figuring this out,’ Kendall says. ‘They’re all doing things that are innovative and different. So, Lancaster Symphony is right on the leading edge of how this is all happening.’ ”
