The Vermont Symphony Orchestra will perform the world premiere of Jennifer Jolley’s The Ferry Crossing during its annual fall “Made in Vermont” tour from September 25 to October 4, the traditional start to the VSO’s season. The VSO commissioned the piece from Jolley, who will travel with the orchestra on its eight-town tour of the state, during which she will speak with audiences about the piece. Music Director Jamie Laredo will lead The Ferry Crossing as well as Sibelius’s Suite Mignonne and Grieg’s “Evening in the Mountains” from Two Lyric Pieces, and serve as soloist in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and with violinist Katherine Winterstein in Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor. In a program note about the piece, Jolley writes, “Ferries are a mode of transport I never encountered until I moved to Vermont in 2003. I left California after college, and while trekking to Burlington I found a vessel that would transport me magically over the endless Lake Champlain.”
