“The Fountain City has ensured that one local music group will be forever commemorated throughout history,” reads an unsigned article posted Monday (9/21) at television station WTVM (Columbus, Ga.). “A historic marker was erected Monday to honor the history of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson was on hand for the unveiling ceremony, as well as symphony Music Director George Del Gobbo. The marker is aimed at educating residents about history of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, which dates all the way back to 1855. ‘It’s a great feeling,’ said Cameron Bean, executive director for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. ‘I think it sends a message to the citizens of our community as well as tourists visiting our community that ours is a city that values the arts and culture and has for a very long time.’ The Columbus Symphony Orchestra says it is the second orchestra founded in the nation and first founded in Georgia.”
