Four musicians have been named to the roster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra effective with the 2015-16 season: CATHERINE CHEN, associate principal bassoon; IVAN IVANOVICH, section viola; BRITTON RILEY, section cello; and GEORGI VIDENOV, percussion/assistant timpani.

Catherine Chen, a native of Taiwan, most recently held the principal bassoon post at the Harrisburg (Pa.) Symphony Orchestra. Winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2012 Albert M. Greenfield Concerto Competition, she has appeared with that orchestra as well as with the National Symphony Orchestra, the United States Marine Band, and the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Orchestra. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. 

Ivan Ivanovich is a former member of the Sonora String Quartet, and has performed as a freelance violist in his native Canada with such organizations as the National Arts Centre, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, National Ballet, and Canadian Opera Company. He studied violin and viola at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music and holds a master’s degree from the Juilliard School.

Britton Riley, formerly assistant principal cellist in Canada’s Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, has won prizes in the Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition as well as the Sphinx and Hellam competitions. He has performed at music festivals throughout North America and Europe. Riley holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s in cello performance and music industry from the University of Southern California. 

Georgi Videnov, a native of Bulgaria, recently graduated from the Yale School of Music with a master’s degree in percussion performance, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel and Weill Recital halls as a member of the Yale Percussion Group, and was timpanist/percussionist of Japan’s Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra during the 2012-13 season.
